Detailed Keywords
It's not enough to have very basic keywords such as 'couch' and 'table'; because anyone searching for just these words will get millions of hits and you can bet that yours will be near the bottom. Instead of going for generic, one word keywords, add some more detail to them such as 'elegant leather chair' or 'affordable waterproof mattress'. These are the kinds of things that people will be actually looking for, put into their search engine, and there will be far fewer hits which means you'll float closer to the top. Of course you can have the generic keywords too so that you're in the lists, but with some detail, you stand a better chance of being noticed.
If you want a good tool to do the work for you, try something like Google AdWords which will tell you what the best keywords for your articles or landing page would be. Then you can use them to attract the search engine and the attention of potential customers. This is only one tool you can use though; most search engines have something like this which tells you what kinds of keywords are 'hot'.
Pay it Forward
Have your site easy to forward information about to others. That way, you can use word of mouth with ease. It can be as simple as a button that says 'Forward to Others'; so long as it is easy for customers to tell others about your site, a lot of promotions will be done for you. You can also have buttons like Subscribe which allows your customers to instantly keep up with your updates and makes them feel special and important for doing it, which leads to more purchases and more money for you.
Incentives
Everyone is adding 'special bonuses' to their products to entice consumers, so how do you make your bonus stand out above the rest? You have to use some creativity to pull it off, but if you can, giving a special gift is a great way to get customers. You can do things like give a free gift related to your product before the prospective customer even has to buy the product (sort of like a sample and an example of why your product works all rolled into one.) You can give additional gifts on top of your initial product; this is well used, but for a good reason; it works. With some imagination and creativity, you can easily come up with incentives to rope people into buying your products.
You can even have loyalty gifts such as 'Spend X amount and get this gift' or something akin to this idea. It's a good way to have people coming back, especially if you change up the gifts periodically so that people receiving them think they're getting something like a collectible.
Building a list is all about being both creative and detailed. You have be sure that you are not only near the top of a search engine (or at least in the top couple of pages), but in order to keep your one-time customers, you have to play on their loyalty which makes you have to do things like offer incentives and let them do the word of mouth advertising for you. Building your list is a very rewarding experience, both monetarily and when you see your numbers grow almost automatically.
